Globally unique timestamps can be generated using either a centralized or distributed approach.The centralized approach uses a single site for generating timestamps.A disadvantage of thisapproach is that if this site fails,timestamps can no longer be produced.
Generating timestamps using the distributed approach provides more of a fail-safe mechanism,however care must be taken to ensure the logical clocks at each site are synchronized.
